Every brand has a story about its humble beginnings, and the K-Swiss brand is no exception. It all began when two Swiss brothers, Art and Ernie Brunner, moved to sunny California. They began creating a footwear brand designed specifically for the tennis court. The brothers themselves were outdoor enthusiasts and athletes, skiing down the slopes of mountains and lobbing balls across the tennis net. So when it came to creating a court-worthy shoe, they took inspiration from both sports — a leather ski boot inspired them to create a tennis shoe expressly built for performance and movement.

In 1966, the brothers debuted their first shoe, the K-Swiss Classic, a leather tennis shoe that quickly caught on as a fashion statement in the mid- to late-1960s. The K-Swiss Classic became a mainstay on tennis courts, at country clubs and even in the culture at large. But there was still just that one shoe.

Twenty years after the first shoe, K-Swiss introduced a second shoe. In 1986, The Gstaad sneaker dropped. Then, in the 1990s, the K-Swiss company went public and put out a high-top K-Swiss Classic sneaker.

It was really in the 1990s when the brand launched into the pop-culture stratosphere. Suddenly, the company was on fire with its classic designs and upgrades. The sneakers were everywhere. K-Swiss shoes were seen on the streets, on the feet of NBA players, the courts of Wimbledon and in aerobics classes across the globe. Footwear News called K-Swiss “the little athletic footwear company that could.”
