Champion Legacy

In 1919, the Feinbloom brothers began the Knickerbocker Knitting Company in Rochester, New York. Soon after its formation, the company teamed up with the University of Michigan to manufacture uniforms for its various Wolverine teams. In the 1930s, the company got its name – Champion Knitting Mills Inc., actually – and began manufacturing sweatshirts. Those designs caught the eye of the U.S. Military Academy, which used Champion athletic clothing during its training exercises and P.E. classes.

Champion really came into its own worldwide in the late 80s. In 1989, Sara Lee Corporation acquired the company. Champion began making uniforms for the NBA, some NFL teams and some colleges. It even made kits for the 1992 Olympic basketball team. That era also brought Champion into the fashion mainstream. Baggy Champion sweatshirts were all the rage when paired with turtlenecks and Keds or preppy topsiders.
