Nike Air Max Month 2019: The History of Air Max
Disco, bell-bottoms, Southern Rock and fat Elvis. That sums up the late 1970s. Not exactly earth shattering awesomeness. But out of the '70s muck came Nike's revolutionary "Air" technology. A few short years later in 1987, legendary sneaker designer, Tinker Hatfield, created a movement, a design, an aesthetic...the window to the sole...that would span generations and spur creative athletic expression. Celebrate Nike Air Max Month with Hibbett Sports as we look back at the History of Air Max. Click or tap the images to explore more details.
Nike Air Max 1987-1997
The first decade of Air Max. First and foremost, it's the original, 1987's Air Max 1 with the visible air unit that birthed a movement. 1989's Air Max II or Light, 1990's Nike Air Max 90, the Air Max 180 from 1992, 1993's Air Max 93, the trend setting Air Max 95 from 1995, and the sleek comfort of 1997's Air Max 97.
Nike Air Max 1998-2008
Air Max's second decade starts off hot with 1998's Air Max 98. 1998 also saw the release of Air Max Plus aka Air Max Tuned. The next big release in the Air Max line was the Air Max 2003. Three years later Nike hit the innovation button again and launched Air Max 360 in 2006. The 360 offered cushioning all the way around the sole.
Nike Air Max 2009-2019
The third decade of Air Max offers sweet new collections like the "Throwback" that takes retro designs and offers new twists on colorways and materials. The "Have A Nike Day" collection inspires the consumer to live their best life. It features Air Max styles and other iconic Nike footwear designs. 2017 brought the VaporMax and it's full-length air bag sole. Combined with flyknit uppers, the VaporMax is the lightest, most flexible Air Max ever. The Air Max 270 launched later in 2017 and offered the thickest air bag ever while still wrapping 270 degrees around the heel. In 2019 it's time to Just Go Bigger with the Air Max 720. Nike has combined 720 degrees of air bag cushioning with sleek, modern textile uppers and distinct colorways.
