What Are Some Common Foot Disorders and Injuries?

Whether you’re a walker, a runner or a tennis player, your feet are one of your most important assets. Foot pain is sometimes due to injury, but many times it’s due to improper foot care.

What is Pronation and Who Has It? (See illustration below)

Pronation is rolling or collapsing at the ankle. It’s a natural part of the gait cycle that distributes the force of the foot strike through the foot and leg. Most people pronate to some degree.

What is Overpronation?

Overpronation is when the foot rolls inward excessively, rather than rolling across the ball of the foot. This twists the foot, shin and knee, and may lead to pain in each of those areas.

How Can I Tell If I’m An Overpronator?

If the medial part of your shoe’s outsole is excessively worn, if your shoes tilt inward when you place them on a flat surface or if you have flat feet when standing straight, you’re an overpronator.

What is Supination?

Supination, or underpronation, is the insufficient inward roll of the foot after landing, which places extra stress on the foot. Supination can lead to Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis and iliotibial band syndrome.

How Do I Know if I’m a Supinator?

Look for excessive wear on the lateral part of the outsole or a high arch when standing up straight.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Persistent pain located on the bottom of the heel and the foot’s medial area.

The pain concentrates on the Plantar Fascia, a thick band of tendon-like tissue stretching from toes to heel. Caused by lack of proper stretching, overpronation, supination or overtraining. If left untreated, heel spurs may occur, further irritating the condition.

What Are Shin Splints?

Pain down the front of the leg caused by degeneration of muscles attached to the tibia or shinbone. Caused by overpronation, supination, overexertion or improper biometrics.

What is Runner’s Knee?

Patellofemoral Pain syndrome, or Runner’s Knee, is pain near the knee cap, caused by overpronation, supination, overexertion, and tight calf muscles and hamstrings.

What is Achilles Tendonitis?

Inflammation, swelling, degeneration or rupture of the Achilles tendon, which runs from the heel to the calf muscle. The tendon propels you forward when running, and injury may be caused by overpronation, supination, sudden increases in exertion, excessive hill running or excessive increase in speedwork.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome?

ITB syndrome is swelling and pain along the iliotibial band ligament, which runs up the outside of the thigh from the hip to the shin. Caused by supination, overexertion or running on banked surfaces.
