Before we talk too much into the color palette, let’s take a quick dive into the history of the original Jordan 12s … and their retro releases. The Air Jordan 12s were actually the first model to drop after the Jordan brand transitioned into an official Nike subsidiary. Those OG 12s hit the streets in 1996/1997, the year Michael Jordan played in the NBA finals with the flu.
The 12’s initial run got five distinct colorways — a black and white “Taxi” colorway was the first release in 1996; additional colors came out the following year and included White and Varsity Red/Black; Obsidian, White/French Blue; Black/Varsity Red; and Black/Varsity Red, White and Metallic Silver. And while, naturally, these kicks graced the feet of MJ, they also enjoyed star status on the feet of his teammates, including Scottie Pippen.
By the way, Michael Jordan and the Bulls won the “Flu Game,” Game 5 of the NBA Finals, while rocking the 12s and forever cemented the basketball sneakers in the minds of Chicago fans as a result of MJ’s legendary performance.
The Air Jordan XIIs were first retroed in 2003 and ’04. Subsequent rereleases have come out since that initial retro.
Nike’s iconic designer Tinker Hatfield dreamed up the 12s, drawing inspiration from the striking design of the Japanese flag with its rising sun and emanating rays. To translate that to a shoe design, he created a leather panel that stretched from the midfoot to the toe, with sun ray-like lines stitched right into that upper. The Air Jordan 12 was the first pair of Jordans to include Nike’s Zoom Air Technology.
