For more than 30 years, adidas designers and engineers searched for the perfect midsole material that would help fuel a runner’s performance.
They found it in 2013 in the form of thousands of pebble-like energy capsules fused to form a Boost midsole, which delivers unmatched energy return, responsiveness and comfort.
Behind adidas Boost Technology
The team took thermoplastic polyurethane and expanded it to create these clusters of energy, or eTPU (the “e” standing for expanded). The result: a soft, cloud-like ride that withstands any running condition while also providing durability, flexibility and exceptional energy return.
adidas All Boost Sneaker Styles
Since the debut of Boost technology, adidas has continued to integrate the technology into new sneaker styles to accommodate runners of all strides. The adidas Ultraboost sneaker, one of the brand's most popular Boost releases, launched in 2015. While Boost technology covered the midsole aspect of the sneaker, the adidas team also addressed how tension affects a runner’s foot.
The resulting running shoe includes a breathable Primeknit upper, separated lace cage and full-length Boost cushioning. Newer iterations of the Ultraboost build on that fundamental premise. The Ultraboost 20, for instance, incorporates 20% more energy return into the midsole than the original, while also adding Tailored Fiber Placement stitching for a more snug feel.

Out of This World Performance Running Shoes
adidas continues to study and improve its Boost technology. Most recently, adidas partnered with the International Space Station to study Boost technology without the limits of gravity. As Boost pellets get studied in space, adidas will continue its “space race” to continue bringing the finest performance-enhancing shoes in the galaxy to runners.
