Moving the Goalpost with Football Gear

Quality, well-maintained, properly fitting equipment is important for combating injuries during gameplay. That’s why Hibbett | City Gear carries the top football gear brands to ensure you or your children are properly protected in practice or in a game. Our selection of football cleats, football gloves, football helmets and football protective gear is from seasoned brands who know the ins and outs of the game. And, of course, we have all the other gear, including footballs and practice goals, to round out your supplies and adequately prepare for the season.

Selecting the Right Football Helmet

With the constantly emerging advocacy for head and brain protection, we want to make sure you select the best option from our line of football helmets. Above all, you should focus on a properly-fitting a helmet to ensure you’ve chosen the right one for yourself or your budding NFL star. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Measure the athlete’s head circumference, then compare it to available helmet sizes.

A helmet should sit an inch above the brow, and ear holes align with the ears.

Try on a football helmet with wet hair to simulate gameday conditions. It should fit tightly but still comfortably.

Once you’ve determined a good fit, pull the chin strap around. The strap should easily fit around the chin and fasten without any trouble. Don’t use the chin strap as a tightening device.

It’s a good idea to pull the helmet from side to side as well as up and down to ensure the best fit. Cheek pads should stay firmly in place and not slide, and the forehead skin should move with the helmet. Additionally, the helmet shouldn’t sag onto the athlete’s nose. So if they’re feeling any discomfort on the bridge of their nose, consider a different option.

Other Protective Football Gear

In addition to football cleats and helmets, you’ll want to choose items that provide maximum protection on the sidelines, during practice and throughout the game.

Mouthguards provide flexible protection during hard hits.

Receiver and lineman gloves pad the hands for protection against the ball while guarding your grip.

Arm and leg sleeves keep muscles primed to minimize strains and other injuries.

Polycarbonate visors help players focus on the ball while removing potential injury or impact to the face and eye area.

Padded uniforms give more in the way of full-body protection to the chest and legs.

How Much Does Football Gear Weigh?

The weight of football gear typically varies based on the size and brand. A helmet usually weighs between 4.25 and 4.75 pounds, and shoulder pads tend to come in around four or five pounds. A game jersey and pants are around a pound each, and you should probably factor in another pound for additional pads.

How Do I Put on Football Gear?

Once you have your girdle and any underpadding place, proceed by slipping on your pants, lacing and buckling them tightly but comfortably. Then, put on your cleats, and lace them up. Next, put on shoulder pads. You should already have your jersey in place on your shoulder pads, leaving the buckles exposed. Start by putting the neck hole on the top of your head and slipping your arms through the arm holes one at a time. Once your arms are through, guide the neck hole down over your head. Then, have someone tighten the shoulder pad buckles to ensure a snug fit and pull the jersey down over the buckles. After this, put on your helmet, and you’re ready for the gridiron.
