Earth Day comes around every year on April 22. Since the 1970s, the celebration has brought awareness to climate change and ocean and air pollution, mobilizing people across the globe to take better care of our planet and create a more sustainable tomorrow.
At Hibbett | City Gear, we’re proud to support sustainability efforts from brands like Nike, The North Face, Birkenstock and adidas and their commitments to producing more products from recycled materials, reducing their carbon footprint and eliminating waste.
Join Hibbett | City Gear on Earth Day — and every day — in our support of sustainability by shopping these eco-friendly brands.
Nike’s most recent sustainability effort is the brand’s “Move to Zero” campaign, which centers around a commitment to moving toward net-zero carbon emissions and zero waste.
As part of the initiative, the brand endeavors to reduce its environmental footprint by powering the company’s facilities with 100% renewable energy by 2025.
Nike also continues to combat plastic pollution by utilizing recycled materials from more than 1 billion plastic bottles annually to create yarns for jerseys and uppers for the brand’s signature Flyknit shoes.
And Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe initiative gives old shoes new lives through Nike Grind, which converts retired footwear into new products, playgrounds, running tracks and basketball courts.
The North Face is among the most prominent ambassadors for the outdoors and Mother Nature, and has spearheaded numerous sustainability efforts to help protect the environment well beyond Earth Day.
The North Face Renewed is the brand’s “re-commerce” platform through which the company sells refurbished clothing to reduce waste from discarded apparel, and its “Clothes the Loop” program offers an opportunity for people to donate their worn-out clothes to be recycled.
The Renewed program works in partnership with Soles4Souls. Donated items are repurposed to help create sustainable jobs and provide relief by redistributing shoes and clothing.
The North Face also partners with the National Parks Foundation to collect more than 380,000 pounds of plastic bottles from national park waste areas and water bodies to be recycled into tees and hoodies as part of their Bottle Source Collection.
In addition, The North Face launched their FUTURELIGHT™ line, designing products with 90% recycled materials produced in eco-friendly workspaces.
adidas has worked with Parley for the Oceans since 2015. Together the brands take plastic waste from the Earth’s oceans and remote beaches and transform it into performance apparel and footwear.
The adidas x Parley for the Oceans and Primeblue product lines feature signature shoes, including the adidas Ultraboost DNA, made from upcycled plastic.
adidas also reduces emissions by revamping its packaging and switching supply chain sea freight to more sustainable fuel sources.
Cork, natural latex, jute, leather and wool felt are just a few of the naturally sourced materials the Birkenstock brand uses in its shoes. In fact, since 1988, Birkenstock has used environmentally-friendly adhesives, and since the early ’90s, the company modernized its facilities to reduce its energy consumption by more than 90%. Birkenstock’s long-standing commitment to better environmental practices makes it a winner when it comes to sustainable sandals and slip-ons.
Brands like PUMA, Under Armour and New Balance are all making big moves to reduce their environmental impact as well, whether it’s in the materials used to make their products, their manufacturing processes or the sustainability partners with which each brand works.
No matter how big or small the movement, all forward motion is progress in the fight for our planet’s survival. So make every day Earth Day when choosing your footwear and apparel!
