How to Choose Track Spikes
Before selecting the latest vibrant pair of Nike track spikes or modern black adidas shoes, you’ll need to consider the event and fit.
Track & Field Events
- Sprinting spikes use a small, lightweight plate with lots of spikes — usually eight — to allow for maximum traction and acceleration.
- Jumping track spikes feature a larger plate with five to seven spikes for more stability and support when jumping and landing.
- Throwing spikes have a very large plate with three to five spikes to provide a wide, supportive base for throwing.
- Distance spikes include a smaller plate with four to six spikes for a more comfortable fit over longer distances.
Track Spike Fit
Track spikes should fit snugly but not too tightly. Your toes should not touch the front of the shoe, but you should still have some room to wiggle them. Most track spikes run a half-size or full-size smaller than regular running shoes. This is because they need to be snug to provide good traction. If you are unsure of what size to get, it’s best to try on the spikes in person.
How to Comfortably Wear Track Spikes
- Make sure your feet are clean and dry to help prevent blisters and rubbing.
- To put on your track spikes, start by inserting the spikes into the holes in the plate.
- Once the spikes are in, lace up your shoes so they’re snug but not too tight.
- Wear thin, non-slip socks. Thicker ones can bunch up and cause blisters.
- Once your track spikes are on, walk around a bit to ensure they are comfortable. If they feel too tight or too loose, adjust the laces accordingly.
Look for neon green Nike track spikes that’ll provide an eye-catching pop of color as you go the distance. Select a pair of effortlessly cool adidas track spikes featuring gradient striping along the sides. Throw a set of Sof Sole replacement spikes in your bag as a backup before your event. Or toe off in Under Armour spikes outfitted with the brand’s signature HOVR sockliner.

How should track spikes fit?
Men’s and women’s track spikes should fit snugly but not too tightly. Your toes should not touch the front of the shoe, and you should still have some room to wiggle them. To get the most accurate fit, try spikes on in the afternoon or evening, when your feet may be more swollen or at their widest.
Do you need spikes for track?
It depends on the event. If you’re running a relay, sprints, hurdles, performing long, triple or high jumps or pole vaulting, you’ll likely need track spikes. Long-distance races, however, typically don’t require them. Check with your coach before you shop!
