Jun 16, 2023

We celebrate Juneteenth and the news it brought that enslaved Americans were free. We celebrate this day to remember the fight of those who came before and to amplify the stories of those who've dared to step through the doors emancipation opened for creatives like model, designer, and creator Maleake Kersh, to thrive in the media and artistry industry.

Tell us about yourself! Who are you; what do you do?

Maleake: Greetings, my name is Maleake Kersh. I am an aspiring model/clothing designer and all-around entrepreneur. I am from Brent, Alabama. I was born on June 21, 1997. I graduated from Bibb County High School and later went on to play basketball at Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama.

How did you get into your line of work?

Maleake: It is quite interesting how I began conducting and producing the work that I do.

I was always told by family members and close friends that I should pursue a career in modeling; however, growing up within rural Alabama—and from my neighborhood—I never considered it until one a day photographer saw some of my work on Instagram and asked to shoot some photos of me. From that day forward, I developed a burning desire and passion for modeling.

As far as clothing, I was always into fashion and style but never knew of the different virtues and/or ventures within the industry, until life took a pause, and I was no longer able to pursue my basketball career in college. I knew that my skills and potential enabled me to figure out very quickly what my calling was.

I knew that owning a business and pursuing my passion in within the arts, design, and fashion were integral to my own growth as a young a man. This was the birth of my clothing brand “I”.

What do you hope to communicate/achieve through your art?

Maleake: I hope to communicate and manifest true and free expression through my modeling and clothing. I understand the most successful individuals always find ways to both remedy and solve issues and obstacles as they occur.

I recognize that freedom of expression is a crucial issue within the political and societal landscape currently, but true and free expression outlasts contemporary issues.

How do you honor your personal history, your heritage's history through your work?

Maleake: Isaac Newton said, “If I have seen further, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants.”

This quote personifies my journey within the fashion and clothing industry. Not only have my ancestors provided a foundation that is rooted in hard work, determination, and passion, but likewise, the community and people that I currently surround myself all live by those same characteristics.

The genetics and traits given to me are to be used to bless and help others through my work. I stand on a proud heritage, and I am grateful I can continue to share my experiences.

What is the significance of Juneteenth in your life?

Maleake: Personally, Juneteenth is representative of a celebration and serves as a commemorative day of the emancipation of slaves in America. Foremost, I think that this day represents reflection. It gives my community and the nation a way to remember the lives and families of people who ultimately built our nation and served the country without pay.

This day, I thank my ancestors for never giving up and expressing their truths, living on hope that one day they would be free.

Maleake: On Juneteenth, I think that the historical context and piece is important. Learning new information or stories that I have never heard are key to celebrating this day for me.

How do you celebrate or honor Juneteenth?

Maleake: Today, this holiday represents a way to reach out to close friends and family and be grateful. Almost akin to Thanksgiving in November. It is a day I like to surround myself with those who are near and dear to me. Like any major holiday, we celebrate with food, family, and stories.

Why do you think it is important to celebrate and highlight Juneteenth each year? How do you think this will impact future generations?

Maleake: It is important to highlight this moment not only in American history, but for the heritage and families who may not have documented experiences for their loved ones.

This day serves as a memorial for those who were once enslaved. A commemoration of lives lost, families severed, and the harsh reality of our nation. This will serve future generations to preserve and commemorate times such as these and highlight facts that may be passed down for centuries.

It is important to understand our history and how or why things happened. Celebrations such as Juneteenth are just one way we have demonstrated our willingness to learn and not lose sight of expressing our truths.
