A Brief Brooks History

After its start in 1914 making ballet slippers and swimsuits, the brand moved into mainstream sports in 1921 with the development of its first baseball cleats. These early predecessors of the Brooks Ghost found themselves on the feet of championship teams, as well as one very famous name, in particular: Mickey Mantle. 

In 1962, Brooks’ then-CEO Jerry Turner pitched the brand’s baseball cleats to Mantle and Roger Maris. Maris turned them down; however, Mantle bought two pairs on the spot with a check for $44. Brooks had also produced a plethora of other sports footwear, including roller skates in 1929 and football cleats in 1930. However, it was in 1972 when Frank Shorter won the Olympic marathon and simultaneously piqued public interest in running that the Brooks brand began to narrow its focus to running shoes, developing models like the Villanova, Vantage and Hugger GT.
