Birth of a Running Shoe

Want to run like the wind? Let the Nike Air Max Tailwind take you across the finish line with a retro style updated for today’s runners. Originally released in 1979, the Tailwind is arguably one of the most important shoes in the Air Max line. Why? This flagship sneaker debuted Nike’s Air-Sole cushioning.

Legacy of Air

The initial Tailwind release sold out quickly, becoming a favorite of runners. The shoes got a re-release in 1992, just in time for the summer Olympics. That sneaker – the Air Tailwind 92 – was first in the Tailwind line to get a visible Air window. The release of the Tailwind 96 marked the shoe’s move under the Air Max umbrella, and the sneaker got a chunkier upgrade befitting of the era. Other Tailwind releases rolled out throughout the decade. Then, on the cusp of a new millenium, Nike introduced the Tailwind IV in 1999.

Underfoot Comfort and Tech

The enduring style of the IVs continues well into the 2020s. Thanks to improved features like visible Air Max cushioning in both the forefoot and heel, these shoes are built for enhanced comfort on the pavement, the track or the trail. The IV’s upper is a masterful combination of leather (or synthetic leather, depending on the model) and fabric – bolstered by ribbed details – for stretch and stability right where you need them. The running sneaker’s flex grooves bend with the foot, while a thick rubber outsole enhances on-the-ground stability.
