It’s Nike Air Max Month, and as we approach Air Max Day, March 26, we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite Nike Air Max sneakers of days past, including one recently re-released AM97 that’s still available in select sizes on our shelves!
The Air Max 97 launched in 1997, a full decade after the Air Max 1. From a birdseye view, the sneaker’s rippled layers resembled the ripples created by water droplets on a pond’s surface. However, the Christian Tessler-designed shoe made waves in the sneaker community not for its ripples but for its never-before-seen Air unit and its bullet train-like shape.
One of the Air Max 97’s original colorways, the “Silver Bullet,” caught on like wildfire in the late 1990s in the sneakersphere and in fashion around the globe. The “Silver Bullet” 97 was especially popular in Milan. Locals nicknamed the colorway “Le Silver” in reference to the liquid metal that pumped through the veins of Italy’s manufacturing industry.
The Air Max 97 colorway was re-released in December 2022 in honor of the silhouette’s 25th anniversary.
