Unisex Footwear Sizing: A Beginner's Guide

Ever feel like shoes are too gendered? Why can’t we all just wear what looks good and feels comfortable? Unisex shoes combine the best of both worlds while shrugging off traditional labels! Plus, they’re perfect for people of all genders, expressions and ideals.

How does unisex sizing work?

While you may not find a unisex shoe size chart, unisex shoes are sized the same as men's shoes. To convert men’s sizes to women’s, you’ll subtract 1.5. If, for instance, you wear a size 9 in women’s, then you’d look for a 7.5 in men’s (or unisex) sizing.

How do I find the right unisex shoe size?

The best way to find the right unisex shoe size is to measure your feet!

  • Stand barefoot on a flat surface.

  • Place a ruler or tape measure along the longest part of your foot, from the heel to the tip of your longest toe.

  • Once you have measured your feet, look up your measurements in a unisex shoe size chart — or use the above conversion chart to find your best size.

  • If you are between sizes, consider going with the larger one. This will give you a little bit of extra room in the shoes.

    Where can I buy unisex footwear?

    Unisex footwear is available online at Hibbett.com or any of our local Hibbett and City Gear stores! If you visit your nearest location, you’ll be able to try on the shoes, walk around and wiggle your toes to make sure your feet are comfy.

    But if you’re shopping online, you can still find your best fit. Look for the True Fit meter found above the shoe sizes. This is located on the product details pages when you’re looking at a specific sneaker online. If you get those sneakers in the mail and they don’t fit, no worries! You’ve got 60 days to swap them out for a different pair.

  • Keep in mind that some brands run larger or smaller than others. Nike running shoes, for instance, tend to run smaller and narrower. Converse shoes, on the other hand, run a bit bigger in length.

  • Read reviews. People love to share their woes when a shoe doesn’t fit like they expected. Reading reviews will give you a better idea of sizing, comfort and overall shoe quality.

  • Check those return policies. Ready to buy a pair of dress shoes from a discount site? Read the fine print! That way, if the shoe doesn’t fit comfortably, you can easily exchange them.
