What Is Nike N7? Understanding Nike's Indigenous-Inspired Collection

Jul 13, 2026

Nike N7 is a long-term initiative dedicated to celebrating and empowering indigenous communities. The N7 collection, developed seasonally, showcases indigenous heritage. Proceeds from the seasonal collections go to the N7 Fund, which supports Native American and indigenous youth sports programs.

The Mission Behind the Movement: What N7 Means

Nike's N7 initiative dates back to 1999, when Sam McCracken — then working at Nike's Oregon distribution center — proposed improving health and wellness in indigenous communities through physical activity.

The idea took root. By 2000, McCracken, a member of the Sioux and Assiniboine tribes, was the manager of Nike's Native American business. In 2007, he helped launch the Nike Air Native N7 shoe, the first shoe designed specifically to support active lifestyles in Native American and indigenous communities (research indicated, for example, that Native American feet are generally wider than European feet, on average).

The N7 Fund started actively dispensing support to indigenous communities in 2009. It has since helped Nike deliver $15.2 million to 324 community organizations to date.

The N7 Fund is primarily a vehicle for investing in community nonprofits. The Fund reviews applications and distributes funds to approved organizations annually.

Nike's overall mission statement is "to bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world." The N7 Fund is one mechanism for extending that mission's reach to indigenous communities.

N7 is itself a reference to the Seven Generations philosophy of planning for the future. Or, as Sam McCracken describes it, "The authentic connection I have to the belief that we must consider the impact of all of our decisions on the next seven generations."

Cultural Symbolism and Signature Design Elements

At this point, Nike N7's history spans almost every product line the company supports. There is a Nike SB N7 collection for skateboarders. There have been N7 Air Force Ones and Air Jordans. There has been an N7 Pegasus for runners and a string of signature Kevin Durant KD N7 sneakers for hoops fans.

All told, the N7 project has worked with more than 20 different Nike silhouettes and produced dozens of seasonal capsule collections.

The collections celebrate aspects of indigenous culture in their design language and through collaboration with indigenous artists. For example, turquoise is considered a sacred, living stone in several Native American cultures, symbolizing a connection to the sky and earth. The 2025 N7 summer collection featured an N7 SB Dunk Low turquoise colorway.

Since 2014, San Diego State University has partnered with N7, wearing turquoise jerseys for one home game every year as a gesture of solidarity with local Native American communities in San Diego County.

The Spring 2016 N7 collection drew inspiration from the work of artist and activist Bunky Echo-Hawk, a member of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma and Yakama Nation of Washington. The collection included four-pointed stars on several apparel pieces, an element of cultural symbolism that Echo-Hawk described as "something that a lot of tribal communities identify with.... They pay homage to the power that is above us."

The four-pointed star references the four cardinal directions — north, south, east and west — and the four sacred elements. It is considered a symbol of the balance of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of life.

Exploring the Latest Nike N7 Collection Launch

The Nike N7 Summer Collection 2026 is a soccer-inspired apparel and footwear collection. Launched on June 18, it features material inspirations drawn from the weaving and textile traditions of Native American communities.

Key pieces include a Burgundy Crush training jacket with matching high-rise shorts, Max 90 t-shirts and a Fir Green mesh soccer jersey. The collection also features exclusive Nike Gato and P-6000 N7 colorways.

The collection was developed in collaboration with two athletes with Native American heritage. Madison Hammond is a member of the San Felipe Pueblo (Katishtya) and the Navajo (Diné) tribe and Black; she is recognized as the first Native player in the NWSL. TJ Kahoalii is a collegiate midfielder who recently transferred to Stanford University from Louisville. The former Hawaii U-20 prospect is Tolowa Dee-Ni' Nation and Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian).

The Continuing Impact of Nike N7 in Sneaker Culture

Through the N7 Fund, Nike makes a continuing contribution to Native American and indigenous communities. N7 collections also play a vital role in energizing Nike's apparel and footwear, broadening design influences and creating products that leave a lasting and positive impact.
