Hibbett x Nike Unveil New Philanthropic Effort, Host Bama in Boutwell Game

Oct 22, 2024

Hibbett & Nike, in partnership with Birmingham, AL-based agency Knight Eady, hosted an exhibition basketball game between the University of Alabama and Wake Forest University on October 18 at the historic Boutwell Auditorium.

The game benefited Children's of Alabama and served as the finale to a full week of community engagement moments presented by Hibbett and Nike.

Moments included a private meet and greet with the University of Alabama's men's basketball team at the children's hospital, dinner at Boutwell Auditorium for VIP game day ticketholders, an invitation-only shootaround with the UA team, and more.

The week also served as the official unveiling of Hibbett and Nike's new philanthropic initiative, First String. Focused on supporting local high school boys and girls basketball programs, the program fosters athletic, academic, and career success, seeking to create opportunities for young people to thrive on and off the court.

To introduce First String to the community, Hibbett and Nike donated $50,000 to Wenonah High School's men's and women's basketball teams. Players each received a new pair of Ja basketball shoes as well and were invited to test out the Bama in Boutwell hardcourt ahead of Friday's game.

In an ongoing effort to support the community, First String will donate funds to local basketball programs each year and select one player from the boys' and girls' teams to receive scholarship assistance for their post-high school education.

Scholarship recipients will also gain access to internships and career development opportunities with Hibbett at their Birmingham corporate office, helping them explore passions beyond basketball and gain valuable career-building experience.

Doors opened at 5 PM to more than 2,000 spectators on game day, October 18. In addition to it being game day, October 18 marked the 1-year anniversary of Nike x Hibbett's Connected Membership program.

Before the game tipped off, Nike Connected Members and fans had the opportunity to take Ja launch-inspired photos at a self-serve photo booth, enter for a chance to win a $1,000 prize at halftime and shop exclusive Bama in Boutwell merch.

Hibbett also hosted its first-ever pop-up shop in the Boutwell lobby where attendees could shop the Nike Ja 2 "Nightmare" ahead of its October 25 launch. Pairs sold out!

For fans who were unable to attend in person, Hibbett also live-streamed the game on YouTube. The stream saw more than 40,000 views and had a peak viewership of 9,000 spectators all watching at the same time Friday night.
