Like its contemporary counterparts — the Tatum 2, Ja lineup, Luka and Nike Zoom Freak silhouettes — this Jordan edition also focuses on ground play, zonally tuning sections of the shoe for better cushioning, better functionality and better traction. French for “foundation,” “Sol” espouses the design of this new Jordan model.
A white mesh upper has a tonal pattern symbolizing Jordan’s paint-breaking moves on the hardwood. To achieve this visual effect, designers had test wearers repeatedly perform Jordan’s cross-step in a painted shoe until this pattern appeared.
The oversized tongue is thick and padded with a quilted diamond-like texture that mimics the global emblem on the AJ 9, along with a red Jumpman. White tongue tabs help the wearer slip on the mid cut shoe before practice time or game time.
Perhaps the most revolutionary part of these shoes is its cushioning. The Air Jordan 39 combines full-length ZoomX foam with a full-length Zoom Air unit, significantly boosting its comfort and responsiveness.
A large, translucent overlay rests atop the midsole, adding more grip, more traction and more abrasion resistance to the sneaker. Meanwhile, a debossed No. 23, shiny black patent leather planetary emblem and a white leather overlay inform the shoe’s heel. Black accents also run along the midfoot.
Finally a modified herringbone traction pattern layers atop a black Jumpman insignia. The translucent rubber outsole provides max ground grip.
