In 1982 Michael Jordan’s buzzer-beating jump shot was the reason the Tar Heels clinched the National Championship. Since that win, every game he played in the NBA he’d wear his “lucky” UNC shorts beneath his Bulls uniform.

Superstition or luck? Either way, His Airness ascended to eternal greatness. To commemorate this magical pair of pants, the Jumpman brand is launching a “Lucky Shorts” colorway. Offered in toddler, preK, grade school and men’s sizes, the Air Jordan 3 Retro “Lucky Shorts” launch February 22. Enter our sneaker raffle for your chance to purchase a pair from Hibbett.

Michael Jordan’s lucky shorts were predominantly UNC powder blue, with a white university logo toward the bottom. Those shorts traveled with him from Chicago and across the world in his illustrious, record-breaking, history-making career, further proof that the “Comeback Kid” never forgot his roots.

The 2025 Air Jordan 3 Retro “Lucky Shorts” sneaker takes a restrained approach, opting for a white upper rather than a blue one. Summit White, Hydrogen Blue, Photon Dust, Legend Blue, Pure Platinum and Sail all create a crisp colorway as elegant as MJ’s on-court moves back in his heyday.

The smooth-as-butter white leather upper gets cozy, platinum mudguards, lacing system and ankle collar, which melts into a vintage-toned Sail midsole with a pop of Legend Blue that runs around the heel. That same blue composes several of the shoe’s lacing eyelets, as well as the lighter blue Air Jordan logo at the ankle.

A rubber outsole commingles most of the colorway’s tones, with a light grey traction pattern, “Jordan” spelled out in shades of blue, a lighter blue pivot point and Sail midfoot. Hydrogen Blue is a barely there pastel, and you’ll also notice it on the tongue’s embroidered Jumpman and a delightfully fuzzy padding on the tongue’s interior.  A washing label gets affixed to the tongue’s underside as well — a not-so-subtle nod to the care instructions that appear in a pair of “lucky” shorts.

Initially released in 1988, the Air Jordan 3 was Tinker Hatfield’s first foray into the Jordan brand. And, in true Tinker fashion, this architect-turned-Nike-designer added a window into the sneaker’s sole so wearers and fans could see the cushioned comfort that Jordan relied on to achieve his greatness. The shoe employs both genuine and synthetic leathers for both durability and support, while a foam midsole and more encapsulated forefoot Air offers street-ready cushioning.

Generations of sneakerheads have walked in the shoes of the legend. You can too if you enter the sneaker raffle to increase your odds of copping a pair of the “Lucky Shorts” Air Jordan 3 Retro. Find them at Hibbett on February 22 in toddler, preschool, grade school and men’s sizes.
