Air Jordan 1 "Banned" History
The legacy of Air Jordans began months before the iconic October 18 game when Nike designer Peter Moore sat down with the young Jordan to design a shoe that would be known the world over for decades to come. This dynamic duo constructed the sneaker for optimal support on the basketball court and debuted the Air Jordan Wings logo on the ankle. They also incorporated a black and red colorway to match the Chicago Bulls team colors to really turn some heads.
However, the boundary-pushing kicks ruffled a few NBA feathers. Why? At the time, NBA rules stated that basketball shoes must be predominantly white with traces of team colors.
In February 1985, the NBA submitted a formal letter to Nike Vice President Rob Strasse, and the league fined Jordan $5,000 for breaking the rules, giving the famous shoes their “Banned” nickname. What the NBA didn’t expect was for this to become a pattern. You see, MJ didn’t back down. In fact, he occasionally wore his favorite black-and-red sneaks, and the NBA issued a fine each time.
