You don’t have to be freaky fast or even athletic to get your freak on in 2020. All you need is the latest pair of Nike Zoom Freak 1 basketball shoes.
The grade school kids’ and men’s “Roots” colorway drops January 10 in a soulfully eclectic multicolor palette of Total Orange, Dynamic Yellow, and black. Perhaps the most mind-boggling release in the Freak line so far in terms of color, each shoe is patterned differently.
The left shoe’s upper comes swathed in blue with Total Orange appointments playing heavily at the laces and insole. The right shoe is green with Dynamic Yellow hits.
The Milwaukee Bucks star and 2019 NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, aka the Greek Freak, released his first signature basketball shoe last year and has since debuted more than half a dozen colorways — each one more innovative than the last both in both game-changing tech and design inspiration.
The new “Roots” colorway pays homage to the player’s heritage and family, specifically his parents – Charles and Veronica – who hailed from Nigeria before moving to Greece, where Giannis grew up. Their names come emblazoned on the outer midsoles. His brothers’ names also appear on the heels.
A staple in Zoom Freak design, the Total Orange and Dynamic Yellow sneakers’ outsoles feature the line’s exclusive rose-inspired traction pattern in honor of the player’s late father, who loved the flower.
Further, the Nike basketball shoe’s forefoot lacing bands represent forward’s four brothers, forming a strong support system both on and off the court.
Large lateral reverse swooshes in Dynamic Yellow and neon pink punctuate the Zoom Freak 1’s see-through mesh overlays in alternating blue and green. The right, green shoe gets purple EVA inserts on both sides, along with a purple-colored rose traction pattern on the outsole. The left blue shoe features blue EVA inserts.
The collection’s signature “GA” logo is stitched at the tongue and featured on the sneaker’s outsole along with the phrase “I Am My Father’s Legacy.” The number 34 is embroidered on each heel.
Technical components of the “Roots” Zoom Freak 1 release include double-stacked Zoom Air units situated under the heel, a rubber clip runs from the outsole up the side of the shoe for superior lateral support and a padded collar for supplemental ankle stability.
The Nike N7 Summer 2025 collection is set to arrive at Hibbett, continuing its impactful mission of celebrating Indigenous communities across North America. This year's release integrates Native culture into essential sportswear, offering a powerful blend of heritage and contemporary design.
The Greek Freak honors his roots with the new men’s and kids’ Nike Zoom Freak 1 multi-color Total Orange, Dynamic Yellow and black colorway, available Jan. 10.
