Swiss brothers Art and Ernie Brunner began creating a footwear brand in California that was designed specifically for tennis players. The pair were outdoor enthusiasts and athletes themselves, skiing down mountains and lobbing balls on tennis courts. So when it came to creating a court-worthy shoe, they took inspiration from both sports. A leather ski boot inspired them to create a tennis shoe expressly built for performance and movement.
In 1966, the brothers debuted the K-Swiss Classic, a leather tennis shoe that quickly made a fashion statement. It became a mainstay on tennis courts, at country clubs and even in daily culture. Twenty years later, K-Swiss introduced The Gstaad. The company went public in the 1990s and put out a high-top K-Swiss Classic sneaker. That set off a wave of popularity that continues today, on the feet of NBA players, on the courts of Wimbledon and in aerobics classes across the globe. Footwear News calls K-Swiss “the little athletic footwear company that could.”
