Air Force 1 Origin Story
Named after the president’s trademark plane, Nike Air Force 1 sneakers got their start on the basketball court in 1982. Just two years later, in 1984, Nike tried to discontinue the shoe to focus on new designs; however, sneakerheads weren’t having it. Faithful fans actually petitioned to bring back the shoe — an unheard-of response at that time.
So in 1986, the Nike Air Force 1s returned and continued in popularity throughout the rest of the decade and into the 1990s. In the early 2000s, new colorways along with women’s sizing and models emerged.
In 2002, rapper Nelly called out the shoe in his track “Air Force Ones,” and the “Flaves” eventually found themselves on the feet of stars, such as Kobe Bryant, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre and Bella Hadid.
