You know the sport by its telltale crack of the bat, the cloud of dirt that billows into the air as the batter slides into a base, and the smell of a meticulously oiled glove. Whether you’re a player or a spectator, baseball is America’s quintessential pastime. So in honor of the upcoming MLB Championship series, here are some of our favorite on-the-field (and in-the-stands) moments during the championship games through the years. There are a few stellar plays involved, but many of these moments showcase the sport and the nostalgic Americana that goes along with baseball, too.
In an early October 2021 matchup between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, a cat stole the spotlight. While not during the Championship Series, technically speaking, the feline made for a pretty agile outfielder. Even the most focused players cracked a smile as the cat got chased away.
It was Oct. 31, 2001, and the world was still reeling from the devastation of 9/11. The Yankees took on the Diamondbacks in Game 4 of the Championships. As the clock struck midnight, Derek Jeter slammed a walk-off home run over the fence, giving the Yankees a win. The scoreboard lit up with the words “Mr. November,” and the nickname stuck forever.
When Red Sox player David Ortiz walked onto the diamond in April 2013, it was with a mic in hand. “This jersey that we wear today, it doesn’t say ‘Red Sox.’ It says ‘Boston,’” he intoned. That impromptu speech came on the heels of the horrific Boston Marathon bombing and is now immortalized on T-shirts and murals.
It’s been … a minute … since Willie Mays took to the field, but his 1954 over-the-shoulder-catch during the Series was, fortunately, captured on a black-and-white reel and etched into the minds of baseball fans across the country. Now in his 90s, Mays is still remembered for “The Catch.”
Let’s face it, 2020 sucked. But even with the barrage of doom and gloom, there were plenty of bright spots. Case in point: the Dodgers MLB Championship Series victory that was more than three decades in the making. Mookie Betts, Corey Seager and Julio Urias performed at their best, but it was that sweet, sweet victory despite lockdowns and COVID restrictions that really tug at the heartstrings.
