In the final part of our Hispanic Heritage Month series, we talk with Becky about her Mexican roots, the foundation of family, and why visibility in her sport is so vital.

For professional soccer player Becky Contreras, the game is about more than athletic performance—it's about heritage, sacrifice, and the unwavering strength of family. Her journey is a testament to the core values instilled by her parents, giving her a profound sense of gratitude for where she is today.

"My parents made so many sacrifices when they came to the United States for a better life," she explains. Because of this, her Mexican heritage shaped her to be a person and an athlete who is "always grateful, stay[s] humble, and work[s] hard to accomplish my goals."

That dedication is fueled by an incomparable source of inspiration: her family. "I would definitely say my family inspires me," Contreras says. "It gives me so much joy and confidence knowing that they are proud of me and that all of my family in both the United States and in Mexico are all rooting for me in everything that I do." The value of family is, in fact, the most vital tradition she carries with her. "Hispanic culture is all about family," she notes. "The love shared among us and our relationships with each other are incomparable to anything else in our lives. It is the foundation that keeps us solid."

Today, Contreras lives the dream of representing her roots on the professional stage. Being able to represent Mexico through her sport is a source of immense pride. "There’s no better feeling than getting to do what I love while representing the country where my family comes from," she states. Moving to Mexico to play professionally has allowed her to connect with her family and "dive deeper into my culture."

This visibility is a responsibility she takes seriously, especially when considering the next generation. It’s "extremely important" for young Hispanic/Latino kids to see professional athletes who reflect their own background. "I hope that I can inspire little girls and boys who look like me to chase their dreams and never give up," she says, emphasizing the grit required to achieve success. "Nothing I have in my life was ever handed to me. Whenever a young Hispanic/Latino kid sees me, I want them to be reminded that their dreams can come true too."

For Contreras, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is a chance to acknowledge and reflect on history. She hopes people use the month as an opportunity for appreciation and learning. "Hispanics/Latinos helped build this country (USA). Our culture and traditions are all over this country, so I encourage people to use this month as an opportunity to learn about and appreciate our culture," she encourages. "I take great pride in being Hispanic and where my family comes from," she concludes. Through her actions on and off the field, Becky Contreras embodies the sacrifice, hard work, and deep family foundation that define her heritage, making her an inspiring role model for all.
