Tis the season for men’s shorts. And with it comes the age-old question: “What length shorts should I get?” It’s a loaded question depending on whom you poll. Fortunately, we’re here to help with a bit of guidance on men’s shorts lengths.
When shopping for men’s shorts, you’ll usually find them in the following standard lengths, with minor variations:
Each inch length refers to the inseam measurement — i.e., how long the shorts are from the crotch to the hem.
In general, here are a few good rules of thumb to abide by when selecting short lengths:
On the shorter side? Or have a taller frame and enough confidence to rock a thigh-skimming style? This length is for you. No matter your height, if you want to show off those legs, proudly wear a pair of 5-inch-inseam shorts or swim trunks.
Try: Under Armour UA Speedpocket Shorts or Pro Standard Atlanta Hawks Shorts
Unless you’re super tall, a 7-inch inseam will probably be your sweet spot — not too short, not too long and a few inches above the knee. Look for 7-inch styles in chinos and swimwear.
Try: Nike Flex Stride Running Shorts or Nike Terry Shorts
If you’re taller than average, a 9-inch inseam is a good look for you.
Try: Nike Sportswear Tech Fleece Shorts or Nike Sportswear Club Graphic Shorts
Where are the tall guys at? If you’re clocking in above 6 feet and want a pair of men’s shorts that fit your frame, go with a longer inseam.
Try: Wedding Cake shorts or Dickie’s Work Shorts
As with all guidelines on shorts, the rules are fake. We say wear whatever feels like you. If you’re confident enough to show off more leg, go ahead. If you prefer a longer-length short, even if you’re on the average side height-wise, good for you! If you like a specific style or color of shorts, go for it.
