What to Wear to the Gym in Winter

Oct 30, 2026

The gym gets hot, but the weather is cold, so you need to prepare for both. If you dress only for the gym, you'll be cold on the way and could even catch a cold or another virus. If you dress only for the weather, you'll sweat and feel suffocated during your workout.

The Three-Layer Rule For Cold Weather Commutes

The secret to mastering winter gym outfits is following the three-layer rule. Wear removable layers so you can adjust to the heat of the workout or the chill outside.

Your base layer should be gym-ready. Choose a lightweight, breathable base layer you would normally wear while you work out. Ideally, select moisture-wicking fabrics that won't leave you drenched by the end of your routine. If your base layer traps sweat, moisture can seep into your other layers, making you cold when you step into the chilly air.

Next is your middle layer. It could be a lightweight long-sleeved shirt, or a heavier fleece hoodie. It depends on your preferences and just how cold it is outside. The middle layer should be more substantial than your base layer, but it still needs to fit under your top layer, so it shouldn't be too bulky.

The last layer (your top layer) should be the warmest and most protective. Think puffer coats, insulated jackets and thermal materials. This layer will save you from freezing when you step outside. Definitely don't wear it during your workout, but wear it to and from the gym. Nike Tech Fleece is a great option here, but any warm outer layer works. Shop Hibbett's collection of winter workout outfits for women to find all three layers you need (plus the right bottoms!).

Performance Bottoms To Keep Your Muscles Warm

Cold-weather workout pants can be one of the toughest things to figure out. Top layers are easy, but finding bottoms that work in cold weather and a hot gym is harder.

A great option is performance leggings or training tights. You can wear shorts, joggers or sweatpants over these slim-fitting bottoms to stay warm outside while still being workout-ready when you step into the gym. Joggers or sweatpants alone might not be warm enough, and shorts definitely aren't.

Adding an extra layer keeps your muscles and joints warm on your way to the gym. If your body gets too cold, it can be hard to warm up enough before exercising. And if you're not properly warmed up, you might injure yourself during a high-intensity gym session.

A great way to manage layers and cold weather is to wear multiple layers on your way to the gym. If your training shorts, tights or leggings are drenched in sweat at the end of your workout, it's wise to take them off and just wear your second layer of bottoms on your way home. The sweaty clothes make you more vulnerable to the cold, even if you have a dry layer on top.

Look for thermal materials, like cotton, fleece, wool, knits and thick polyester. Breathable bottoms are great for the gym, but make sure you have a warmer layer for outside. Making your cold-weather gym clothes removable and versatile is the best way to be prepared for any temperature.

Essential Outerwear For Your Winter Training Rotation

Your base layer and your outer layer are probably the most important parts of your winter gym outfit. Your base layer should be light and breathable, but your top layer needs to be heavy-duty. It should not be breathable, because you need it to trap heat and block the wind.

For cold, rainy days, you can pair a middle-layer hoodie with a waterproof raincoat or reliable windbreaker. This keeps your base and mid-layers dry while blocking the chilly breeze. If moisture isn't the issue, but it's extremely cold, focus on insulation. Tech Fleece jackets, down coats, puffer styles, parkas and similarly cozy styles are the right choice.

For middle layers, consider thermal quarter-zips, fleece hoodies, thicker pullovers and other mid-weight styles that add warmth without bulk. You can keep these on during your workout and remove them as things heat up, making them your most versatile layer.

Winter Accessories To Complete Your Toe-To-Head Look

Your top and bottom layers are crucial, but make sure you're protecting your head and extremities with winter accessories. Winter gym outfits aren't complete without beanies, thick socks and warm gloves. Maybe add a scarf for extra torso warmth, too!

Think about your shoes too. Unless there's a foot of snow outside, you probably don't need to wear boots. Whatever training sneakers you choose, make sure they have premium traction so you don't slip on ice when you walk into the gym.

Don't let the cold stop you from hitting your goals. Shop at Hibbett for winter gym outfits and keep the grind going in every season.
