How Do I Make My Hoodies Last Longer?

Aug 20, 2019

There are countless reasons to wear a hoodie. On top of being a great choice for tailgating and keeping warm, sweatshirts also serve as a layering item that can complete the right look. Caring for your hoodie is more than a wash and dry, here are a few of our best tips to get:

Don’t Wash After Each Use

Unless you’re sweating in your hoodie, consider wearing the sweatshirt as many times as possible before tossing it into the washing machine. Our top tip is to wear a long-sleeve T-shirt underneath your hoodie, so it doesn’t come in direct contact with your skin. After each use, place your hoodie on a hanger to air it out.

Follow These Directions When You Must Wash and Dry

● Use cold water, a delicate cycle and color-saving detergent when it’s time to give your sweatshirt a wash. Avoid detergents with bleach, and don’t add bleach to any load containing sweatshirts.

● If you’re mixing your hoodie with other clothes, try throwing it in a mesh bag for extra protection and limited friction with the other clothing articles.

● Turn your hoodie inside-out to avoid damaging an applique or screen print.

● Zip the sweatshirt if it’s a hoodie with a zipper. Otherwise, the zipper might get caught up in something and bend, or the metal could damage other clothes in the wash, including other hoodies and sweatshirts.

● Dry on a low or delicate cycle. For even more thorough care consider hanging up your sweatshirt. Air drying your hoodie prevents shrinking and cuts down on the wear and tear from all the heat and scrambling around.

Give Your Hoodie a Rest

Wearing the same hoodie day in and day out is a surefire way to push it into early retirement. Rotate your hoodies every couple of days, or even more if you’re wearing them while exercising.

Store Them Smartly

Depending on where you live, it might get too hot to wear your favorite sweatshirt. Proper storage during your hoodie’s offseason is vital for helping it last longer. Instead of cramming it into a plastic box or a dresser drawer, use a wooden hanger and place it in a cool, dry closet.

Consider Refreshing a Faded Sweatshirt

Darker colors will eventually fade no matter how much care goes into looking after them. When a hoodie starts to look dingy, try using a simple cloth dye to have it looking like new. Be sure to stay away from all-purpose dyes, and carefully read the instructions to make sure the dye won’t affect any of the screen printing or embroidery.
