In 1997, Penny was one of the hottest commodities in the NBA he was rocking another next level pair of kicks in the Air Max Penny 2 with it’s acclaimed wave design. That year he also laced up his most revolutionary pair of kicks yet — the Air Foamposite One. The tough outer shell of the Foamposite was inspired by beetles but the wavy seamless design was inspired by the future of basketball.
The Foamposite initially dropped at $180, a higher price point than even MJ’s signature line. It was rumored that Eric Avar originally intended the shoe for Scottie Pippen, it was debuted on court by Mike Bibby during his collegiate days and Spurs’ Power Forward Tim Duncan rocked his own colorway as well but when the shoe released it only came in one color — University Blue, the color of Penny’s Orlando Magic. Penny famously had to color in the grooves of his Foamposites with a black marker in order to comply with NBA dress code.
At the time of its creation the Foamposite was a technical marvel. The Foamposite’s seamless carbon fiber body was unheard of at the time. Designer Eric Avar has been one of Nike’s most forward thinking designers crafting some of Nike’s most memorable models like the Air Max Penny 1, Gary Payton’s signature Zoom Flight 98, and Dennis Rodman’s signature Shake Ndestrukt.
It was so futuristic that Nike had to enlist the help of speaker company Daewoo to build the mold for the Foamposite. The Foamposite One is probably the only shoe that begins in a liquid form as it had to be poured into the mold at a high temperature to get its iconic shape. The Foamposite One was such a spectacle the advertising featured only a picture of the shoe and a phone number to call. The Foamposite continues to be one of the most popular shoes in Nike’s deep catalog with a slew of new and glorious colorways after being retroed for the first time in 2009. The first colorway to be released when it was initially retroed? Copper — just like a Penny.
