Knowing the parts of a club is a good place to start. But knowing the type of golf club to use is essential to a good game. Three types of clubs exist, depending on the kind of play: woods, irons and putters.
- Use woods for teeing off or for long-distance fairway shots. The driver wood, or 1, has the longest shaft and the least degree of loft (head angling). This helps to drive a greater distance. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 woods increase in loft and decrease in shaft length, which means they lessen the distance potential.
- Select irons for rough and long shots on the golf course. Irons consist of 10 clubs, numbered 2 through 9, “P” and “S.” Each iron offers a different loft. The lower the number on the iron, the less loft it has. Too much loft reduces distance, while too little loft causes the ball to travel and roll farther. The “P” wedge is the pitching wedge, for rough and short shots to the green. The “S” wedge is the sand wedge. This is the best iron to free the ball from a sand trap. Usually this wedge offers the largest degree of loft, which enables the head to not cut into the sand, but gives through it and frees the ball.
- Choose putters to nudge the ball into the hole. The short, stiff-shaped clubs help with accurate shots. Better putters are weighted on the heel and the toe, which prevents twisting for a straighter shot and allows for a smooth follow-through.
