Layering is a fashion skill. Do it wrong, and it can look messy and awkward. But do it right, and a basic outfit can feel more intentional and tasteful. Layering fleece for spring or fall is a classic way to incorporate extra pieces into your look while staying ready for the weird weather these seasons can bring.
For both seasons, you should focus on lightweight layers that won’t make you overheat. Fall and spring mornings can be chilly, but days can warm up quickly. Lighter fabrics cater to all times of day, while heavier layers can become cumbersome and sweaty by the end of the day.
Materials like thin cotton, mesh, nylon and light polyester are perfect, but wool and corduroy can be too thermal. A brilliant option is the Nike Tech Fleece, which offers the right balance of warmth and breathability. It’s made with a unique blend of 53%–66% cotton and 34%–47% polyester. It can feel light but still work as an effective layer when it’s colder out.
Lightweight jackets and coats are wonderful transition layers, but don’t get too hung up on these comprehensive types of layers. You can also create transition outfits with vests, windbreakers, hoodies, quarter-zips, pullover sweatshirts and flannel shirts.
Something like a vest helps keep your torso warm without trapping too much heat. A windbreaker can block the chilly breeze but stays light enough for hotter times of day. These types of layers are also easy to take off and tie around your waist or shoulders, or even fold and put in your bag. It’s not so easy when you’re working with a big puffer jacket or heavy coat.
