Born out of a partnership between Nike and Michael Jordan, the Air Jordan line has transcended the court, becoming a cultural icon celebrated for its innovative design, performance features and timeless style that appeals to a wide range of wearers. The Air Jordan 1 immediately defied expectations upon its 1985 launch, and the brand has continued to be the G.O.A.T. of the sneaker world since. In 2022, the Jumpman produced 60 million pairs of sneakers. And while there are many winners in the mix, few ultimately rise to the top. Why are Jordans so popular? Top teams of designers, a commitment to enduring materials and plenty of good press along the way have kept the Jordan brand at the top of the sneakersphere.

Iconic Jordan Models & Colorways

Almost every silhouette in the Jordan line has been wildly successful. Still, these standout sneakers and innovative colorways have something special that sneakerheads gravitate toward.

Air Jordan 1

When did Jordans become so popular? With the 1985 release of the Air Jordan 1. This shoe broke the mold with its high-top silhouette and daring color combos.

Bred: Its mix of black and red is arguably the most popular Jordan colorway in the history of colors, thanks to its “Banned” status.
Chicago: Capitalizing on the Bulls’ colorways, Chicago was one of the OG colorways blending white, red and black.
Royal: Another OG that’s been retroed many times, and it’s the only inaugural shoe that His Airness did not wear during a game.

Air Jordan 3

The 1988 release of the Air Jordan 3 introduced the world to the Jumpman logo and the elephant print mudguards.

Black Cement: This OG colorway takes on a black, Fire Red, Cement Grey and Sail makeup.
White Cement: Another OG, White Cement also blends Cement Grey, along with Fire Red and Sail.

Air Jordan 5

AJ 5s ushered in a new decade: 1990. And with it came bold new colorways, translucent netting and lace locks.

Some of the most popular Jordan styles include:

Grape: A very ’90s colorway, “Grape” features white, black, New Emerald and Grape accents. The Fresh Prince of Belair himself wore these kicks.
Fire Red: This black, white and red version of the AJ 5 includes red shark tooth detailing reminiscent of WW2 fighter planes.

Air Jordan 6

Released in ’91, the AJ 6 has become a fashion icon, thanks to its higher cut and chunky, enduring style.

Carmine: As one of the most popular Jordan colorways, “Carmine” blends white leather with black hits and swaths of Carmine Red.
White Infrared: A shot of infrared streaks along the midsole of these otherwise white shoes, embellished lightly with black.

Air Jordan 11

The AJ 11s weren’t the only thing that premiered in 1996. That November, Michael Jordan — and Bugs Bunny — starred in the classic film “Space Jam.” With shiny patent leather mudguards, these shoes were sleek and suave.

Concord: A mix of white, black and Dark Concord gives these shoes a luxe aesthetic.
Space Jam: This otherworldly sneaker is predominantly black with hits of either blue or Concord, depending on which iteration you cop.

Air Jordan 12

In 1996, MJ played his infamous flu game — and won — in a pair of Air Jordan 12s.

Flu Game: The black and red colorway immortalizes a weak, but not defeated, Michael Jordan as he forged a path to victory.
Taxi: White and black make up the balance of the OG, with hits of yellow Taxi” along with the outsole and midfoot plate.

Air Jordan 13

Seven colorways were included in the 1997 release of the AJ 13s, including two of the most popular Jordans ever. In fact, the highest-selling pair of Air Jordans ever sold is the Air Jordan 13s worn by MJ himself during the 1998 NBA Finals. Signed by Jordan, these sneakers sold at auction in April 2023 for a record-breaking $2.2 million.

He Got Game: White, black and True Red form the colorway of this shoe worn in Spike Lee’s hit film, “He Got Game.”
Bred: A black base with red accents made this shoe an instant bestseller, last retroed in 2017.

Air Jordan 4 Retro

While the Air Jordan 4 has been around forever, in 2020, NYC-based Off-White designer Virgil Abloh collaborated with the Jumpman to create a minimalist “Sail” colorway that’s become a grail for many collectors. The tonal sneaker has deconstructed elements, “Air” written in blue near the Air-Sole unit and a zip-tie detail that adds to the industrial aesthetic.
