Hibbett and City Gear are nothing without the communities we serve, that's why this AAPI month, we are honoring our customers and associates from the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities with a few featured stories that highlight the beauty of their cultures and storied heritage. Meet City Gear community member and associate, Sam Masa!
Sam: My name is Samantha Masa, most of my friends and family call me Sam. I was born in Manila, Philippines and I moved to Korea when I was about 7. After being in Korea, I came to Texas. My connection to City Gear is that I was an associate at the store near my college campus in Galveston this year. I just finished my first year as a Marine Biology major.
Sam: My heritage is part of the Asian community and also I’m guessing the Pacific Islanders. I come from the Philippines, which was an amazing place to be born; everyone there is like family, and it's a lively community to be a part of.
Sam: I mostly eat food from back home like Lumpia, Dinoguan, Pancit, and other foods like those. My style mostly came from there but it's also a mix of styles from the US, which is a little refreshing.
Sam: Me and my family just mostly do karaoke which is a big thing in the Philippines, and when we would do parties we would listen to a mix of our country's music and the music from the States. We would also do big cookouts for parties like birthdays or anything like that along with party games.
Sam: I share my culture by sharing food or stories or music.
Sam: To be honest no, I never really heard about it until recently!
Sam: It's important to recognize different parts of the world and to experience what other people have gone through or what it was like to be in their shoes.
