Five Minutes with Coach Sydney Carter

Coach Sydney Carter takes a few to discuss how she comes up with her unique looks to the superpower we all share. Learn more about ​​our Support Her Sole Resident, Coach Sydney Carter!

​​It’s hard to sum up a person in a few sentences, particularly when they’re an all-around tour-de-force. But that’s Coach Sydney Carter. The 32-year-old played her college career with Texas A&M, leading her team to big NCAA wins, before signing with the WNBA. Carter began her coaching career in 2020 at her alma mater before moving to the University of Texas as director of player development in 2022. 

With such an impressive resume’, the 5-foot-6-inch-tall coach also amassed a large Instagram following for her court-side style mixed with her confident coaching skills. “As a little girl, I had dreams,” Coach Carter told Hibbett | City Gear. “It was important for me to see women that looked like me doing exactly what I dreamt to do.” 

We asked Carter a bit more about her fashion influences, fave sneakers and the importance of being authentic.

On Her Baller Style

“My style is my own,” says Coach Sydney. “It's feminine and forceful. I am always dressed to win or for success in everything I do.” That’s evident from her sophisticated looks, whether she’s wearing a fitted skirt and heels with a slicked-back bun, a power suit and sneakers, or joggers and an UT shirt.

On Where She Gets Her Fashion Inspo

“Typically I come up with a theme or color scheme in my head and ideas just flow from there.” If you want to see one of her most controversial looks, Google “Sydney Carter pink pants.” The coach dressed the part for her team’s breast cancer awareness game in a pair of clear heels, bubblegum-pink leather pants and a cream-colored turtleneck.

Her Top Three Favorite Game Day Looks of all Time

“Choosing three is tough,” she says. “I love them all.” But, if she had to pick her top Coach Sydney Carter outfits though, “No. 1 is the pink houndstooth suit,” she says of the fitted power suit she paired with clear stilettos. The second is her brown leather suit, a sumptuous camel-colored leather blazer and pants paired with a turtleneck and gold chain necklace. The corduroy set is another fave, she says of the teal miniskirt and shacket-like top that she wore with chunky heels.

Her Favorite Sneakers at the Moment

While her game-day fits often involve a pair of heels, Carter also loves a good pair of kicks. “My current favorite sneaker is the Nike Air Max 1,” she says. Clean lines, wavy mudguards and endless colorways give these OG Air Max shoes an eternally sophisticated appeal.

On the Importance of Showing up as Your Authentic Self

“Being yourself is your superpower,” says Coach Syd. “No one else can be you. Use that, own that, and bask in that every day.” In a sport that traditionally gets the buzz for powerhouse male athletes and coaches, women like Carter are making sure they’re invited to the table, pink leather pants and all.

“If you can see her, you can be her,” she says. “I wholeheartedly believe that because people identify and relate more to seeing people who look like them shatter the glass ceiling.”
