In addition to its boot-like design and black and white color scheme, Varsity Maize accents further amplify the silhouette. A white leather upper peeks through soft black nubuck tearaway striping along the sides of the Nike Air DT Max ’96. Underlays of buttery yellow material peek through the stripes via cutouts, adding dimension and an impactful hit of color in the process.
The balance of the upper is black, which extends from the tip of the toe up the lacing system and all the way to the neoprene tongue. Satiny tongue material adds a light-reflecting sheen, while the broad midfoot strap includes a white Swoosh. A white football logo appears on the tongue tab, with a baseball Diamond Turf insignia on the Varsity Maize insole. More yellow Swooshes appear on either side of the shoe, with a matching embroidered Swoosh on the ankle. The heel tab includes Prime branding, with a triangular Air emblem holding it in place.
The shoe’s full-length foam midsole exposes a Max Air heel unit for plenty of underfoot comfort. The outsole is predominantly white rubber, save for a large Swoosh and hits of black. A visible “rip” in the heel area includes a bubble of Air and a rendering of Sanders himself, framed in Maize Yellow.
Deion Sanders’ “Prime Time” status is well earned. He’s played for four MLB teams and five teams in the NFL, and he has the distinction as being the only one to play in both the World Series and the Super Bowl. Now Coach Prime heads up the University of Colorado, Boulder’s football team.
