Whether it’s inviting special guests to his games, publicly speaking out about bullied autistic children or donating money to related causes, Donovan Mitchell has done much more than simply integrating autism awareness symbolism into his sneakers.

Anyone can help raise awareness, though, with Mitchell’s latest sneaker release. June 1 marks the launch of the adidas D.O.N. Issue #3 sneakers. This men’s basketball shoe release incorporates puzzle piece graphics, Purple Rush and Semi-Screaming Green tones, all incorporated into an otherwise Clear Grey sneaker.

This men’s basketball shoe lacks some of the more obvious cartoon flashiness of previous D.O.N. models, save for nods to previous versions like a zig-zag emblem along the lacing system. The adidas D.O.N. Issue #3 is a bit heftier in silhouette, taking on a more vintage 1990s basketball shoe look designed for performance.

A thick, Clear Grey mesh dresses the shoe’s upper with strategically placed shapes reinforcing areas of high abrasion along the foot. A rainbow of colors artfully adorns the sneaker. Ribbon-like fabric decorates the heel, trimmed in puzzle pieces and incorporating adidas’ Three Stripes. The generously sized purple heel emblem includes a holographic puzzle piece and “Autism Awareness” written on the tab. Multicolored puzzle piece fabric pads the sockliner, while a midfoot band along the lacing system bears the message: “Determination over negativity.”

Donovan “Spida” Mitchell’s arachnid-style logo embellishes the tongue and the sockliner, definitely taking a backseat to the puzzle piece theme of these kicks. Lightstrike cushioning creates a soft, springy place to land when making buzzer-beating shots on the court. This rendition also retains its web-like outsole pattern for stop-on-a-dime traction.

Perhaps the most impactful part of this particular release is its commitment to sustainability. These adidas shoes are made in part with recycled manufacturing waste. 25% of the components used to make the upper contain a minimum of 50% recycled content.
