Just because Michael Jordan retired in 2003 doesn’t mean he’s out of the game. The streetwear game, that is. Jordan Brand has been hard at work concocting its latest release: the Jordan XXXVI.
Jayson Tatum teased the shoe by wearing it in March during the NBA playoffs, so it’s been a long wait until release day. But the wait is over. The Hyper Violet Air Jordan 36 will release on September 9 in both men’s and grade school kids’ sizes.
This shoe is bright and bold — just like MJ on the court. It borrows heavily from its predecessors, including the sunken heel and tall tongue from the Jordan 5 and the neoprene tongue, tongue shroud and protruding heel from the Jordan 6.
Black and violet leno-weave material covers the entire upper for a construction that is both lightweight and strong. The unique weave effect also creates a see-through appearance that hints at an orange base beneath. You’ll find that same orange shade on the outsole, as well as on branding details on the heel and insole.
Black detailing along the lace guard and tongue ground the vibrant colors, while a shiny purple Jumpman on the tongue tag reminds you that this shoe is not one to be trifled with. The laces bear the same purple and black weave pattern, while the speckled white midsole has a reflective purple stripe running across it. Underneath the middle of the midsole is a curved black accent, which is believed to be an Eclipse Plate 3.0.
The inspiration behind the Jordan XXXVI was light — in all senses of the word. Being weightless, light on your feet and a visual feast were all priorities for the designers. And that’s reflected in the full-length Zoom Air Strobel unit attached directly to the upper. This means no more peek-a-boo Air, but it also brings the cushioning closer to the feet for extra support during those big game moments when you’re giving it your all.
One key detail to keep an eye out for is the infinity symbol on the lateral ankle – a testament to No. 23’s lasting accomplishments in the basketball world. You can join in this elite’s legacy when you grab this black and violet Jordan XXXVI colorway. It’ll be available in men’s and grade school kids’ sizes starting September 9 online and at your local Hibbett | City Gear.
