Get your freak on in a pair of men’s Nike Zoom Freak 1 basketball shoes, available on November 15 in a new “Atmosphere Grey” colorway. These knock-out basketball sneakers offer an ultra-cushioned ride in a soothing palette of oil grey and cool grey tones, along with branded hits of orange.
One of the hottest players in the 2013 NBA draft was 7-foot-tall Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was the 15th overall draft pick by the Milwaukee Bucks. Between his height and his basketball background in the Greek second division, people weren’t quite sure who this kid was nor his playing potential.
But soon, the “Greek Freak,” as he was called by fans, took the NBA by storm with his skills. The Zoom Freak 1 is Antetokounmpo’s first signature shoe as a Nike athlete.
The Freak 1 is a shoe that gives any wearer the ability to stand out, thanks to its distinct details and cutting-edge technology. First, there’s a double-stacked Nike Zoom Air unit located just inside the swoosh. Because of that Air unit, your knees and feet get all the cushioning they need, whether you’re shooting from the free-throw line or dunking the ball. The Freak 1’s cushioning also helps keep your feet fresh throughout the game or wherever you sport these shoes.
Other key features of the Freak 1 include the backward swooshes — one black, one translucent — which run along the outsole and all the way to the heel area. When Nike designed the shoe’s outsole, they blended incredible traction with snippets of Giannis’ story. The soles include three large roses in a multidirectional pattern along with the phrase, “I Am My Father’s Legacy” molded into the shoe— an homage to the Greek Freak’s father.
The sneaker’s simple knit upper gets the oil-grey color treatment, while you’ll find hits of orange on the tongue’s branding along with an orange number “34,” the Greek Freak’s jersey number, embroidered on the heel. Other shades of grey blend in nicely to create a svelte package.
