Back to School, Back to Sports — High School Sports Season Guide

Jul 24, 2023

Back-to-school season is here! If you have older kids who’ve dominated the field or court before, you’re probably well-versed in the schedule of high school sports seasons. However, if your children plan to try out new school sports, you may not be as familiar with what happens at what time. Since your calendar is likely already chock-full of school events and extracurriculars, Hibbett | City Gear is making it a little easier by outlining all potential high school sports seasons in one place.

Fall Sports for High School

With the kickoff of the new school year comes the commencement of fall sports. In fact, some high school fall sports will likely start practices before the school year officially begins. Whether you have a football boy or a bump-set-spike girl, here’s what you need to know to prepare for upcoming high school sports seasons:

Football

Football

High school football is the quintessential fall sport, beginning the season at the end of summer in most places — generally early to late August, depending on the state and climate. Playoffs and title games are usually at the tail end of fall, around November and December. And if you’re dusting off your NCAA or NFL gear, you know to look for similar sports season schedules, with bowl matchups coming in December and those playoff games in the first few months of the new year.

Vollyball

Volleyball

Though volleyball sign-ups typically occur in the summer with a fall sports season ranging from August to October, schedules may vary from school to school and region to region.

Soccer

Soccer season will also vary depending on the league, players’ ages and the area. Where many play in the fall, some cold-climate locations may reserve soccer for springtime. While many grade-school teams play in the fall and the spring, high school soccer is generally a late August through November sport.

Cross Country

Cross Country

Cross country can be a year-round sport. Many college runners start in early fall through mid-March, but high school schedules often span late August through early November.

Swimming

Swimming

Depending on the course (short or long), the events and the pool location, swimming and diving season can be year-round. Look for swim meet sign-ups in early summer, with a season lasting from early to mid-August through November.

High School Winter Sports

Many areas are limited by adverse weather conditions during the winter high school sports season, which dials down the number of available sports during this time of the year. However, the activities that are available offer just the right outlet for a passionate athlete.

Basketball

Basketball

High school teams typically start in November, after high school fall sports wrap up, and play through March. Make sure your kids have the best basketball shoes for their positions. (And if you and your teen are NBA fans, that season starts in October.)

 Lacrosse

Wrestling & Lacrosse

Be prepared for wrestling season to start in October or early November and run until February or March. And falling at the tail end of the season lacrosse starts its regular games from February through May.

Spring High School Sports

Winter is over, and it’s time to enjoy warm weather again! And there’s no better place to do that than on the diamond or the fairway. (And if you find yourself cheering on your athlete from the sidelines or the stands, we’ve got the tailgating supplies you need, too!)

Softball

Baseball and Softball

Depending on your location, baseball and softball seasons can kick off when the weather is still chilly, so make sure your athlete has the right cold-weather attire. For sports fans, the MLB baseball season runs from April through early October, while the NCAA’s season begins in spring and ends with the College World Series in late June.

Golf

Golf

For high schools across the country, golf is either a spring or a fall sport, with a few states like Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas reporting both fall and spring high school golf. Check with your school or golf association when your kid is ready to tee off. And, since they have to dress the part for the green, be sure to find your teen’s favorite golf fits.
