UGG Boots, Sandals, Slides and Slippers

You know UGGs by their signature rich sheepskin outer and thick, warm fleece lining. You may, however, not realize the long legacy and craftsmanship behind your pair of UGG boots or your UGG shoes. Let Hibbett | City Gear cradle your feet in total comfort with exclusive UGG styles now available in-stores and online in kids’, women’s and men’s sizes.

UGG Boot History

In the 1970s, a young Australian surfer named Brian Smith landed on the beaches of Southern California with a bag of sheepskin boots. He was convinced that other surfers would soon see the value and utilitarian comfort of sheepskin, an Australian staple.

In fact, sheepskin boots had been embraced by Aussies since the late 1800s, and during World War I Australian pilots used the boots to keep their feet warm. Some claim the name “UGG” came out of the word “ugly,” while others believe it was a play on the “fug boots” worn by soldiers.

Whatever the name origins, once Smith began riding waves in California, he connected with another innovator, Doug Otto, whose company produced the exceedingly popular Teva sandals. UGG boots seemed like a good solution to the slump in sandal sales come winter. That bet paid off. Surfers around the globe connected with the comfort of the warm sheepskin after a cold ride in the ocean. Olympians embraced the boots during winter events in 1994. The shoes gained a small foothold among celebrities and athletes.

In the new millennium, however, UGG really picked up steam. Oprah gifted UGG boots as part of her annual favorite things list. The New York fashion world lusted after the boots, putting them on the runway and in magazines. Everyone from the Kardashians to Tom Brady got snapped by the paparazzi sporting a pair of UGGs while out and about. And flagship stores began popping up all over the world.

Over the years, there have been plenty of knock-offs, but the UGG brand stands out among the pack, offering a commitment to quality craftsmanship and utilitarian luxury unmatched by any other sheepskin boots.

UGG Features

High-quality sheep or lamb fur sourced from Australia, Ireland, the UK and the United States delivers exceptional warmth inside that pair of UGGs. A sheepskin upper also includes seams with UGG’s signature overlock stitching and a suede heel counter to keep feet protected. The lightweight Treadlite by UGG outsole enhances flexibility, cushioning and traction.
