All About the Magic City Classic

Oct 28, 2021

Since 1946, fans have descended on Legion Field in Birmingham, AL to watch the magic unfold as the Alabama A&M University Bulldogs face off against the Alabama State University Hornets during the annual Magic City Classic.

As the largest historically black college and university (HBCU) football game in the nation, the Magic City Classic is near and dear to Hibbett | City Gear’s heart. Here’s what you need to know about the Magic City Classic.

History in the Making

The first Magic City Classic took place in 1924, where fans watched the Alabama State Hornets take home victory with 30-0. From then on the game has been an anticipated staple in the Black community. Becoming an annual tradition in 1945, the Classic has only been briefly paused in 1932, 1944 and postponed in 2020.

Magic City Matchups

Auburn and Alabama seem to get most of the press, thanks to the Iron Bowl. But the Magic City Classic pits the Bulldogs against the Hornets in more ways than only football. During halftime, the team bands face off in a Battle of the Bands. From new favorites like “Leave the Door Open” to classics like “Lovely Day” both bands put on a show that could rival Queen B’s Coachella Homecoming.

Classic Events

The Magic City Classic kicks off a weekend full of celebrations. This year’s event includes fun for the whole family with tailgates and live entertainment. However, the real kick-off to spectators may just be the parade through downtown Birmingham. Often led by celebrities like LL Cool J and Don Cheadle, this year the Grand Marshal is Club Quarantine’s very own D-Nice.

Before the 80th matchup on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021 head to Hibbett | City Gear to grab an Alabama A&M or Alabama State shirt or your favorite HBCU apparel and get your tickets at your local City Gear.
