All-Star Weekend 2022 – Basketball is More than a Moment

Feb 16, 2022

On the surface, basketball is simple. Dribble the ball down the court. Pass the ball to your teammate. Shoot a three-pointer. Block the opposing team. Guard your goal. Rebound the ball. Sink your free throws. Dribble. Pass. Shoot. Block. Guard. Rebound.

But if the game is so simple, why has basketball transcended the court and into the hearts and souls of hundreds of thousands of fans, into the causal fashion industry and pop culture? If basketball is just a game, why do gym leagues and school teams fuel young athletes’ futures, pushing them to learn teamwork, discipline, critical thinking, and accountability? And if bball is just another sport on TV, why are so many childhood memories, best days and dreams centered around the game?

Because basketball is more than a moment. Basketball is a community, and what keeps a community alive and thriving? Forward momentum. Continuous evolution. Progressive innovation.

The way the game is played today is vastly different from how was played in the 1940s. Team size has changed. The arenas have become grander. The professional leagues have gone international, welcoming players of Australia, Greece, Canada, and beyond. Equipment has been examined, researched, tested, and improved to near player-to-player customization.

And in another 50 years, the game will be different still from the basketball we eagerly watch from our arena seats, sofas, and school bleachers in 2022. The players will change, as will the rules, the uniforms, the skills and more. But that is the beauty of basketball.

The legacy of history’s favorite players and change-makers, the record breakers, the underdogs, the kings of the court… their contributions to the game will continue to impact the industry and its fans for generations to come.

Because basketball is more than a moment.
