Sneakers Release – Jordan Zoom ’92 “Sail” Men’s Basketball Shoe

Jul 1, 2020

The 1990s were a rich decade for basketball shoe design. When the Air Jordan 7 released in 1992, legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield provided a creative reboot.

The AJ 7 sported a West African-inspired vibe with energetic color pops and jagged edges, bold lines on the midsole and a knit Jumpman on the upper that downplayed the perennial Swoosh. The shoe brought back the clean toe box of the AJ 6 and ditched the visible Air-Sole unit, the translucent outsole and prominent Nike Air logo. It also jettisoned the Nike Huarache neoprene booty.

The new Jordan Zoom ’92 releases in men’s sizes on July 2 in a Sail, Black, Flash Crimson and Electric Green colorway. The Zoom ’92 reclaims the sleeve of the Air Max 180, the stitched-down heel badge of the AJ 7 and the sculpted detailing of the Air Force 5. Behind each enhancement, there’s a clear balance between nostalgic throwback and smart design innovation.

The retro-style sneakers sport uppers constructed of lightweight closed-mesh material and a structured overlay. A soft, stretchy sock liner lightens the sneaker without sacrificing its stable, secure footbed. Paired with a billowy collar, the setup brings form-fitting comfort up to the premium level. An array of Jordan branding features across the silhouette, from the molded Jumpman figure on the tongue to the Nike Air and Jumpman on the outsole.

An external rigid overlay along the outer toe adds containment and stability to the performance tooling. The sculpted foam midsole coupled with a Zoom Air under the forefoot provides lightweight and responsive dialed-in cushioning and maximum bounce.

In the Zoom ’92, Air unit visibility returns the shoe to its roots and provides a smooth underfoot sensation. The rubber outsole’s herringbone tread wraps partially up the toe for better traction and durability. Grooves in the outsole provide forefoot flexibility needed for optimal speed, precision and control.
