The One That Started It All: The Air Jordan 1
Generations of sneakerheads have gravitated toward the Air Jordan 1 sneaker since it hit the scene in 1985. Unmistakable style, smooth leather and intriguing colorways will give you all the finesse of the GOAT himself — Michael Jordan. Want a pair of men’s, women’s or kids’ Air Jordan 1s? At Hibbett, we’ve got them in high and low editions, along with must-cop colorways.
The Making of an Icon
Michael Jordan was a rising star, but before he ever set foot on the professional paint, he’d inked a deal with Nike for his own sneaker collaboration. To kick off his legacy of sneaker stardom, His Airness sat down with Nike designer Peter Moore to create a shoe that would come to be known the world over. This dynamic duo constructed the sneaker for optimal support on the basketball court and also debuted the Air Jordan Wings logo on the ankle. To push back on the NBA’s stringent league rules, they incorporated a black and red, or “Bred” colorway, to match the Chicago Bulls’ team colors. The Jordan 1 got its first retro in 1994 — the same year Michael Jordan retired from basketball … the first time.
Over the years, the basketball shoe became a lifestyle staple. Today, you’ll find it on the feet of school kids, celebrities and influencers, and everyday people. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed not to run into someone sporting a pair in the wild. Some of the most iconic colorways of the Air Jordan 1 and its Retros include iterations of “Bred,” “Chicago,” which blends black, white and red, “Royal” and “Shattered Backboard” with its mix of orange, black and white, “Shadow” and “UNC,” the latter of which nods to Jordan’s North Carolina roots.
The Sneaker That Changed the Game
Beyond its status as the most successful sneaker line in history, the shoe itself has key design elements that continue to make it a standout.
Transcending Time
The Air Jordan 1 high top silhouette is instantly recognizable and has influenced countless other sneakers. Its clean lines, simple paneling and bold use of color make it versatile for any look — from casual streetwear to retro-inspired outfits. Whether it's in classic red-and-black "Bred" or a black and white sneaker, the design has stayed fresh over decades.
Solid, Premium Materials
Creating a timeless, durable shoe takes, well, time and premium materials. Whether you’re wearing an Air Jordan 1 Low or you gravitate toward the High, the sneakers typically feature full-grain leather uppers for a signature crisp look that patinas as they age.
Iconic Branding
The AJ1 was the first to feature the iconic “Wings” logo, paired with the Nike Swoosh. These details immediately distinguished it from other basketball shoes and solidified its place in sneaker history.
A Legacy of Air
Despite its old-school look, the Air Jordan 1 was equipped with Nike’s Air technology encapsulated into the midsole. While it wasn’t the first basketball shoe — that was the Air Force 1 — it was a close second. The pressurized tech gave the shoe extra comfort but also made it one of the most advanced basketball sneakers of its time.
