Architectural Air Max Inspirations

In 1987, Tinker Hatfield officially launched the Nike Air Max 1. Air bags had been used in sneakers prior to the ’87 release. In fact, the 1978 Nike Tailwind was officially the first shoe with Air cushioning. However, Hatfield was an architect by training, and he took his inspiration from The Centre Pompidou, a Paris museum designed with all of its inner workings showing. While traditional buildings contain their ductwork, staircases and AC systems within walls, Pompidou’s architect went for an exposed look. Hatfield took the same approach when designing the Air Max shoe. He wanted wearers to be able to see the revolutionary cushioning that was keeping their feet comfortable day in and day out.

So he created a window into the sole of the shoe. That way, anyone could get a glimpse of the transparent bubble of Air filled with pressurized gas that would expand and contract with each stride.
