As a leading premium sports retailer, we know the game of baseball, and we know bats. We understand weight, length, barrel diameter and league requirements, so we can connect you with the best baseball bats on the market. Whether you go with composite or wood, we offer diamond-tested bat brands that include Easton, Rawlings, Mizuno and Louisville Slugger.

Bat Size Matters - How to Pick the Right Size for You

Wondering what factors to consider when purchasing a baseball bat. Here are a few things to take into account:

  • What’s your league? USA Baseball and USSSA set varying standards for bat requirements, and you’ll see the governing body’s logo right on the bat. So before you buy, check with your coach or league to ensure the baseball bat you choose is in compliance.
  • What’s the weight? Measured in ounces, bat weights vary, but rather than seeing the ounces on a bat, you’ll more than likely find the “weight drop.” Weight drop is the bat’s weight in ounces subtracted by the bat’s length. So, if you have a 22-ounce bat that’s 32 inches in length, you’ll see a –10 weight drop. A larger drop weight signifies a lighter bat. Older, more experienced players often rely on the power of a lower drop weight, while a higher drop weight is ideal for younger players.
  • What’s the length? Common bat lengths range from 24 to 34 inches, but to determine the right bat length for you, there are a few ways to measure:
  • Measure from the middle of your chest to the end of your index fingertip.
  • Alternatively, hold the bat’s knob flat against the center of your chest and extend it out, making sure you can comfortably grip the barrel.
  • When standing, place the end of the bat against the ground. You’ll know the length is correct if the knob hits the middle of your palm.
  • Find what feels good. Does the bat seem right when you’re standing at the plate? Does it work with your swing style?

Baseball Bat Composition

While wooden bats used to be the norm, these days baseball bat manufacturers produce lighter-weight options designed for optimal play. Make sure to check any league requirements regarding bat materials.

  • Wood: Wooden bats are most commonly made from maple, ash and birch. While heavier than the metal bats, wood bats can help any player develop the chops for a more powerful swing.
  • Alloy: Aluminum bats are lighter, stronger, incredibly durable and easier to swing. Plus, they’re most cost-effective than a traditional wooden bat, and there’s no breaking-in time.
  • Composite: Composed at least partially of carbon fiber polymer, a composite baseball bat can offer the batter a more evenly distributed weight than the other two bat types. While a composite option does require some breaking in, it dampens vibration and hand stinging. Composite bats have a higher price point than alloy.
