Since 2014, March 26 has been honored as the official Nike Air Max Day; a full 24-hours dedicated to celebrating one of the most renowned silhouettes in sneaker history. At Hibbett | City Gear, we rave about the Air Max line 365 days a year, but this March we are showing the collection a little extra love by celebrating Air Max “Day,” and the 30th anniversary of the Air Max 90, all month long!
Born from Nike’s revolutionary “Air” technology, the Nike Air Max is one of the most iconic and innovative sneakers of all time. A shoe concept that has been continuously improved upon for the last 30 years, the Air Max collection has effortlessly evolved alongside the sports and fashion worlds since arriving on the sneaker scene in 1987.
Taking inspiration from a collection of cultural influences, legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield utilized his architecture background when creating the original Air Max. The line’s signature transparent Air Unit, for example, was inspired by the high-tech, exposed design of The Centre Pompidou art museum in Paris.
Three years later, Hatfield hit paydirt with his Air Max 90 silhouette, which catapulted the line’s popularity into a new stratosphere. Characteristics of the third Nike Air Max sneaker include an overall bulkier appearance, better cushioning and improved support thanks to an oversized Air unit not seen in the Air Max 1 or Air Max Light models. The 90s were also more flexible than previous Air Max shoes, and its upgraded lacing system allowed wearers to customize their fit.
The groundbreaking shoe's flashy colorway was also key to the Air Max 90's success. The introduction of Nike's signature "Infrared" coloring on the Air Max 90 paved the way for a whole wave of fashionable and functional Air Max models and bold colorways not just on Air Max shoes but throughout Nike’s entire product line.
In the years since 1990, designers like Sergio Lozano have built off the original Air Max 90 with equally successful designs like the Air Max 95 and Air Max 98, which eventually lead to iterations such as the Air Max 360, Air VaporMax and beyond.
As part of 2020’s Air Max Day celebration, and in honor of the Air Max 90’s 30 years of influence and world-wide popularly, Hibbett | City Gear is excited to offer the Nike Air Max Month launches you want, including new Air Max 90 colorways, the Air Max Verona and the all-new Air Max 2090.

This trail running sneaker offers a new underfoot experience and lifted stance that provides a modern look and all-day comfort. Air Max 90
Few shoes have made lasting cultural impacts like the Air Max 90. In the 30 years since its original release, the Air Max 90 has seen a variety of colorways and designs with no signs of slowing down.
The iconic silhouette and aesthetic maintain a classic, retro design that never seems to go out of style. The low-top design combined with the signature Waffle sole, stitched overlays and TPU accents makes the Air Max 90 one of the most recognizable and beloved shoes on the market.
The Nike Air Max 90 LX features a burst of vibrant colors and mixed material upper with animal print patterns and denim in a nod to 90's rave culture.
This women's shoe is available March 5 in an Illusion Green and Sunset Pulse colorway.
Air Max 270 React
The Air Max 270 broke with Nike tradition when it was released as the first lifestyle-focused Air Unit.
Unlike the performance-driven designs that came before it, the 270 centered around comfort and style. The shoes’ two defining features are the oversized 270 Air Unit on the heel and the Nike React foam cushioning. The Air Unit offers 270 degrees of visibility and works with the Nike React technology to provide a lightweight, durable fit for optimal energy return and all-day comfort.
For a modern style that looks as good as it feels, pick up the latest Air Max 270 React women's shoe in a Fossil/Hyper Blue colorway at Hibbett | City Gear on March 12.
Nike is celebrating 30 years of the Air Max 90 with the release of the Air Max 2090. This space-age sneaker builds off the foundation of the original Air Max 90 and adds some futuristic flair to the iconic silhouette.
The 2090 keeps several core elements of the Air Max 90 design: the mudguard, cassette and heel logo are reflected in the 2090. New elements included in the design are an updated Air Unit with a larger window, color blocking that relies on multiple layers of opacity, a cropped Swoosh and a reformatted outsole that leverages the waffle outsole of the Air Max 90 with distinct grooves for flexibility and performance.
While the colorway on the original Air Max 90 was influenced by Italian sports cars, the 2090 looks to the future of transportation for inspiration. Celebrate Nike’s past and future by picking up a pair of white, black and Pure Platinum men's Air Max 2090 sneakers on Nike Air Max Day, March 26, in-stores or online at Hibbett | City Gear.
