It’s all fun and games when texting your significant other the lyrics to the Anderson .Paak–Silk Sonic–Bruno Mars song “Leave the Door Open” so you can post their confused responses on TikTok. However, sometimes the only response to “What you doin’? Where you at?” is the emoji of your choice.
World Emoji Day is a thing — oh, yes. It was on July 17, so we are a little late to the party, but we’re just going with it. So just go with us.
Ahem, so as we said World Emoji Day is a thing. In fact, it began in 2014, and like any made-up “holiday,” it’s gotten plenty of buzz over the years. In 2017, the Empire State Building even took on an emoji-yellow tone (you know the one) to commemorate this not-so-sacred day.
Emojis began life in the Millennial age of 1997. Back then, they were simple pixelated images, which evolved to more sophisticated smartphone icons over the past decade. So you can respond to a text with an “LOL” or an “OMG,” but it’s much more entertaining to send a crying laughing face, bottle of champs or a pile of poop to your besties.
IRL you can emoji-fy your fits for World Emoji Day 😊 with these ideas:
Have you checked out Jibbitz? They’re charms for your footwear! Pop on a pair of summery Crocs and embellish them with all things emoji with an emotive Jibbtiz charm… or 26. Wanna proclaim your love of taco Tuesday or pizza every day? Love llamas and lattes? Passionate about politics? Stick on the charm with everything from Jibbitz rainbows to Gen Z phrases (we’re “Shook” just thinking about these charms).
Texting emojis is the equivalent of blowing kisses or signing XOXO to a letter. If you haven’t seen your bestie in a bit, you’re looking to flirt with a crush or you just wanna annoy your mom, spread emoji love (not air-kiss germs) using your favorite icons. Heart eyes, folded hands, tears of joy or piles of poop can have more impact than words alone.
You could accessorize your outfit, bag or rock a pair Nike Air Max 97 Emoji sneakers — or you could be super extra and throw a midsummer World Emoji Day soiree. And by soiree, we, of course, mean a weekend gathering of your best vaccinated bunch complete with emoji accessories, colorful clothing and themed food. Smiling pizzas and emoji-yellow cocktails, anyone?
