April 22, 2020, marks the 50th annual Earth Day celebration. That’s 50 years of bringing awareness to climate change, ocean pollution, and air pollution; 50 years of mobilizing more than 1 billion people annually to take better care of our planet; and 50 years of progress towards creating a more sustainable tomorrow.
At Hibbett | City Gear, we’re proud to support sustainability efforts from brands like Nike, The North Face, and adidas, and their commitments to producing more products from recycled materials, reducing their carbon footprint and eliminating waste.
This Earth Day, join Hibbett | City Gear in our support of sustainability by shopping these eco-friendly brands.
Nike’s most recent sustainability effort is the brand’s “Move to Zero” campaign, which centers around a commitment to moving towards net-zero carbon emissions and zero waste.
As part of the initiative, the brand endeavors to reduce its environmental footprint, by powering the company’s facilities with 100% renewable energy by 2025.
Nike also continues to combat plastic pollution by utilizing recycled materials from more than 1 billion plastic bottles annually to create yarns for jerseys and uppers for the brand’s signature Flyknit shoes.
And Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe initiative gives old shoes new lives through Nike Grind, which converts the retired footwear into new products, playgrounds, running tracks, and basketball courts.
adidas has worked with Parley for the Oceans since 2015. Together the brands take plastic waste from the Earth’s oceans and remote beaches and transform it into performance apparel and footwear.
The adidas x Parley for the Oceans and PrimeBlue product lines feature signature shoes made from upcycled plastic, including the adidas UltraBoost 20, men’s swim shorts, and the TOUR360 XT – the first golf shoe made from recycled materials.
adidas also recently announced its commitment to shift completely to recycled polyester by 2024.
The North Face is among the largest ambassadors for the outdoors and Mother Nature and has spearheaded numerous sustainability efforts to help protect the environment.
The North Face Renewed is the brand’s “re-commerce” platform through which the company sells refurbished clothing to reduce waste from discarded apparel, and their “Clothes the Loop” program offers an opportunity for people to donate their worn-out clothes to be recycled.
Through this program, which works in partnership with Soles4Souls, donated items are repurposed to help create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the redistribution of shoes and clothing.
The North Face also partners with the National Parks Foundation to collect more than 380,000 pounds of plastic bottles from national park waste areas and water bodies to be recycled into tees and hoodies as part of their Bottle Source Collection.
And most recently, The North Face launched their FUTURELIGHT line. FUTURELIGHT products are crafted with 90% recycled materials and produced in eco-friendly workspaces.
Brands like PUMA, Under Armour, and New Balance are all making big moves to reduce their environmental impact as well, whether it’s in the materials used to make their products, how they are manufactured, or the sustainability partners with which each brand works.
No matter how big or small the movement, all forward motion is progress in the fight for our planet’s survival. So make your move today!
