Back to School, Back to Sports – School Sports Season Guide

Aug 26, 2022

Back-to-school season is here! If you have older kids who’ve dominated the field or court before, you’re probably well-versed in high school sports season schedules. However, if your children plan to try out for a new high school sport or your preschooler is raring to go with T-ball or soccer, you may not be as familiar with what happens when. When your calendar is already chock-full of school events and extracurriculars, Hibbett | City Gear makes it a little easier to see all the pre-K, elementary and high school sports listed in one place.

Football

High school football is the quintessential fall sport beginning the season at the end of summer in most places — generally early to late August, depending on the state and climate. Playoffs and title games are usually at the tail end of fall, around November and December. Expect those peewee games to follow a similar trajectory. And if you’re dusting off your NCAA or NFL gear, you know to look for similar sports season schedules, with bowl matchups coming in December and those playoff games in the first few months of the new year.

Baseball and Softball

Both baseball and softball seasons tend to be staggered, depending on your location. While traditionally a sport that begins in spring, middle school, elementary and Little Leagues may also offer fall ball and even summer games. The MLB baseball season runs from April through early October, while the NCAA’s season begins in spring and ends with the College World Series in late June. Before the season starts, be sure to help your little (and bigger) sluggers get the right baseball or softball glove.

Volleyball

Like many other sports schedules, volleyball seasons vary from school to school and region to region. Look for volleyball sign-ups in the fall with a season in the August to October range.

Soccer

Soccer season will vary depending on the league and the children’s ages. Many grade school teams play in the fall and the spring, while high school soccer is generally a late August through November sport.

Cross Country

Cross country can be a year-round sport. Many college runners start in early fall through mid-March, but high school schedules often span from late August through early November.

Swimming

Depending on the course (short or long), the events and the pool location, swimming and diving season can be year-round. Look for swim meet sign-ups in early summer, with a season lasting from early to mid-August through November.

Basketball

After a rocky few basketball seasons thanks to a global pandemic, the NBA is back to a regular schedule with an October start date and an April end date. Playoffs begin in June. High school and elementary teams may start in November and play through March. Make sure your kids have the best basketball shoes for their positions.

Golf

For high schools across the country, golf is either a spring or a fall sport, with a few states like Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas reporting both fall and spring high school golf. Check with your school or golf association when your kid is ready to tee off. And, since they have to dress the part for the green, be sure to find your kid’s favorite golf fits.

Wrestling

Look for wrestling season to start in October or early November and run from February or March.

Lacrosse

Expect lacrosse season to begin practice around January with regular games from February through May.
