How to Clean a Backpack in the Washer or by Hand

Sep 3, 2024

If you have school-age children, you know how dirty and sometimes smelly their backpacks get. Your high schoolers may throw them on the floor of the car, the bus or the classroom. Your middle schoolers conveniently forget to toss old lunches or snacks. Your kindergartener has three water bottles leaking in the bottom of their bag. And don’t even get us started on the little bits of paper, broken pencils and other “treasures” collecting in the pockets.

Our guide walks you through how to clean a backpack by hand or in the washer — no matter how dirty it is.

First Steps to Cleaning a Backpack

Can you wash a backpack? Absolutely, but first, you’ll need to remove all items inside. Then you can take the following steps:

  • Use a hand vacuum to remove loose dirt and crumbs from the crevices of the bag.
  • Spot-treat any stains depending on the backpack material.
  • Wipe down buckles, zippers and other metal parts with a damp cloth.
  • If your child has a leather backpack or the backpack bottom is leather or suede, use a conditioner to help restore its finish.

Apply a waterproof spray to help repel spills and future stains. Check the backpack care label to determine which sprays or treatments you can use.

Washing a Backpack in a Machine

Washing a Backpack in a Machine

Can you put a backpack in the washer? Generally, yes, but with a few precautions. Can you put a backpack in the dryer? Not a good idea. The high heat can damage the fabric, straps and zippers. If you are washing a backpack in your machine, though, here’s how:

  • Check the label. Many backpacks made of nylon or canvas can be machine-washed, but look for the care label to make sure it’s OK before you throw it in and ruin it.
  • Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent. Harsh agitation can damage a backpack or pull off zippers. A quick wash cycle is often enough to get it clean. Mild detergent, such as a free and clear formulation, will do the work of getting that bag clean.
  • Put the backpack in a bag. Use a laundry bag or even a pillowcase to protect both the backpack and your washing machine.
  • Avoid mixing with other items. That zipper or strap can ruin any clothing or towels you may throw in, so wash a backpack by itself.

Air-dry the pack until it’s fully dry.

How to Clean a Backpack by Hand

Some backpacks are hand-wash only. That’s likely true if they’re made of a non-nylon or canvas material — leather, plastic or a quilted cotton, for example. If your child’s backpack has a label that recommends hand-washing, you’ll want to take the following steps:

  • Check for stains, and use a mild detergent or approved cleaner as a spot remover.
  • Fill a sink or tub with lukewarm water. Add mild detergent and, if possible, submerge the backpack in the soapy water.
  • Gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush or sponge, paying attention to stains and dirty areas, such as the bottom of the bag or inside the pockets.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water until there’s no soap residue.

Hang the backpack to air-dry completely.

By following these guidelines, you can effectively clean and extend the life of your child’s backpack for several academic years. Shop backpack styles from Hibbett, and check out our Unboxed Blog for resources that include cleaning your kids’ sneakers, boots, fleece and denim.
